Another time, there was a white cow in a herd of cattle in Mädems, which caused the alpine herdsmen a great deal of annoyance by wandering around; for almost every day it had to be fetched from a steep slope, from a remote cleft or even from another alp.

In his displeasure about this, the alpine dairyman once added to the Hail Mary prayer:

“God protect everything here in our valley,
Except that cursed gray!”

The next morning the mould was hanging from the dairy roof.

265. Den verwünschten Schimmel nicht

Ein andermal befand sich in einer Sente Vieh in Mädems eine weiße Kuh, welche durch ihr Herumvagieren den Alpknechten viel Verdruß machte; denn fast täglich musste sie ab einer steilen Planke, aus einer abgelegenen Kluft oder gar aus einer andern Alp hergeholt werden.

Im Unmute hierüber machte dann der Senn einmal beim Ave Maria-Beten den Zusatz:

“B’hüt’s Gott alles hier in unserm Tal, Nur den verwünschten Schimmel nicht!”

Am nächsten Morgen hing der Schimmel ausgeschunden am Molkendach.
