A Watchman from Mels had a cow in Alp Foo. She did not want to stay with the herd, and the cowman had to keep a constant eye on her. At mealtime she ran away from him again, fell down the “Step” (Cliff) and was dead. In the winter the negligent herder died; but the next summer the herders and a Tschirti, the provision carrier, saw the man carrying the cow up over the “Step”. The Watchman then formally renounced any compensation, and thus the poor man was redeemed.

266. Schlecht gehütet

Ein Wächter von Mels hatte eine Kuh in der Alp Foo. Sie wollte nicht bei der Herde bleiben, und der Küher mußte sie beständig im Auge behalten. Zur Essenszeit lief sie ihm wieder fort, fiel über den “Tritt” hinunter und war tot. Im Winter starb der nachlässige Hirte; im nächsten Sommer aber sahen die Hirten und auch der Proviantträger Tschirti, wie der Mann die Kuh über den “Tritt” hinauftrug. Wächter verzichtete dann in aller Form auf jede Entschädigung, und damit war der Arme erlöst.
