A man passed by a gallows on which a criminal was hanging. He called up: “If you had lived better, you would not be up there now. Then the dead man said: “You will be judged on these words within three days from today in the Valley of Jehoshaphat.”

The man was chilled with fear and anxiety and went straight to the priest the next day to ask him for advice and comfort in this matter. The priest said: “It is difficult to help; but if you have a deceased godchild to whom you have given a gift in his time, go to his grave, call his name three times and make a fervent request that he go to the Valley of Jehoshaphat for you and be your advocate there.”

The man really had such a godchild, to whom he once gave a pair of shoes. He therefore went to the child’s grave and did as he was advised.

The godchild answered from the grave and promised to comply with the request, but remarked that he would have to pay dearly for the godchild’s gift.

269. Die Vorladung ins Tal Josaphat.

Ein Mann ging bei einem Galgen vorbei, an dem ein Verbrecher hing. Er rief hinauf: “Hättest du besser gelebt, so wärest du jetzt nicht da droben.” Drauf fing der Angesprochene zu reden an: “Du wirst mir über diese Worte innert drei Tagen von heute an im Tale Josaphat Rechenschaft geben.”

Den Mann überlief es eiskalt vor Furcht und Angst, und er ging gleich des andern Tages zum Herrn Pfarrer, um ihn in dieser Angelegenheit um Rat und Trost zu bitten. Dieser sprach: “Da ist schwer zu helfen; hast du aber ein verstorbenes Göttikind, dem du seiner Zeit etwa ein Geschenk gegeben, so gehe auf dessen Grab, rufe es dreimal mit seinem Namen und stelle die inständige Bitte an dasselbe, es soll für dich ins Tal Josaphat gehen und da dein Fürsprecher sein.”

Der Mann hatte wirklich ein solches Göttikind, dem er einmal ein Paar Schuhe geschenkt. Er ging daher auf dessen Grab und tat, wie ihm geraten worden.

Das Göttikind gab aus dem Grabe Antwort und versprach, der Bitte nachzukommen, bemerkte aber dazu, daß es damit das Göttigeschenk teuer bezahlen müsse.
