A Master with two farmhands and many pack horses left Sargans from an alpine pasture and wanted to go to Walenstadt, and as he was driving between Sargans and Wallenstadt, he came to a lane near a chapel, where there was also a stable in a paddock. They put their horses in the there and went to sleep in the stable.

And in the night the Master dreamt that a thief wanted to take his horses, and so a ghost came quickly, caught him and carried him to the land of Appenzell on a high mountain; there he saw a woman dressed in white; she went ahead of him and beckoned him; he went after the women, and when he awoke, he was in Stammen near St. Anne.

On the morrow, however, the servants had lost the Master and were afraid that they would think they had mocked him. So they went home and there was a great hue and cry. In a few days, however, the Master came and told them how he had fared, and this was to taken as a great omen.

271. Die weisse Frau

(Aus der Schweizerchronik von Diebold Schilling in Luzern, 1500.)

Es fuhr ein Mann mit zwei Knechten und viel Saumrossen von Saragans ab einer Alp, wollt gen Wallenstadt fahren, und als er aber benachtete zwischen Saragans und Wallenstadt bei einem Kappelli in einer Gassen, daselbst stund auch ein Schürli in einer Matte. In dieselbe Matte taten sie die Ross und laiten sich in die Schür schlafen. Und in der Nacht träumt dem Meister, ein Dieb wollt ihm die Ross nehmen, und also kam schnell ein Gespenst, erwischt und trug ihn in das Land Appenzell auf einen fast hochen Berg; da sah er eine Frauen in Wiss bekleidet; die ging her vor ihm dannen und winkt ihm; derselben Frauen ging er nach, und als er erwachet, war er zu Stammen bei St, Annen. – Morndes hatten aber die Knechte den Meister verloren und besorgten, man würde meinen, sie hätten ihn gemört. Also fuhren sie heim und ward ein gross Geschrei. Jedoch in kurzen Tagen, da kam der Meister und seit, wie es ihm ergangen war, und wohl für ein gross Zeichen soll augeschrieben werden.
