Goatherders “Köbi” (Jakob) and “Seppen-Lihert” (Joseph-Leonhard) were herding the goats together on the long meadow. The day was hot and the two shepherds were thirsty. Then Lihert said: “We want to look for water, so that we don’t have to die of thirst.”

Köbi laughed at this and replied: “Water is too thin for me; I prefer to drink milk. You see that cow over there in Vermol is giving her milk; that’s a pity; I want to make use of it.

Lihert, on the other hand, said that this could not happen so soon, because the cow was more than half an hour away from them and, moreover, the Seeztobel lay between them.

Köbi, however, pushed one end of his shepherd’s crook into his mouth and then sucked milk from it, more than he was able to swallow, so that much of it still flowed out at the corners of his mouth.

The owner of the cow complained to his neighbours and acquaintances that it was often milked secretly from him in the pasture.

275. Die Milch im Hirtenstock

Geissler “Köbi” (Jakob) und “Seppen-Lihert” (Josephs Leonhard) hüteten auf der Langwiese miteinander die Ziegen. Der Tag war heiss und der Durst der beiden Hirten gross. Da sagte Lihert: “Wir wollen Wasser suche”, damit wir nicht verschmachten müssen,” Köbi lachte darüber und erwiderte: “Wasser ist mir zu dünn; ich trinke lieber Milch; stehst du, jener Kuh dort in Vermol drüben stiesst die Milch aus; das ist schade; ich will sie zu Nutzen ziehen.” Lihert hingegen meinte, solches könne nicht so bald geschehen, weil die Kuh mehr als eine halbe Stunde weit von ihnen entfernt sei und zudem noch das Seeztobel dazwischen liege.

Köbi aber schob das eine Ende seines Hirtenstockes in den Mund und sog dann Milch aus demselben, mehr als er zu schlucken vermochte, so dass ihm davon noch viel bei den Mundwinkeln herausfloss.

Der Eigentümer der Kuh beklagte sich bei seinen Nachbarn und Bekannten, dass ihm dieselbe oft auf der Weide heimlich gemolken werde.
