Years ago, complete strangers often came to the remote farms and helped the inhabitants to work. All they asked for was food and drink, but no wages. No one could say where they came from, nor did anyone know what faith they professed. That is why they were called pagans. They had peculiar customs. They preferred to camp on haystacks. They were able to keep fires going on these without the hay catching fire. The wood they used was incombustible. This can be seen in the carvings in the old town hall in Flums, which, according to popular belief, dates back to the time of the pagans.

288. Die Heiden

Vor Jahren kamen oft ganz fremde Leute auf die entlegenen Bauernhöfe und halfen den Bewohnern arbeiten. Sie verlangten dafür nur Speis und Trank, aber keinen Lohn. Woher sie kamen, konnte niemand sagen; welchen Glauben sie bekannten, wusste man auch nicht. Man nannte sie deshalb nur Heiden. Sie hatten eigentümliche Gebräuche. Ihre Lagerstätten wählten sie am liebsten auf den Heustöcken. Ihnen war es möglich, auf solchen Feuer zu unterhalten, ohne dass das Heu sich entzündete. Holz, welches sie verarbeiteten, war unzerbrennlich. Das habe man beim Holzwerk des alten Rathauses in Flums erfahren können, da dieses Gebäude nach dem Volksglauben aus der Zeit der Heiden herstammte.

Das alte Flumser Rathaus wurde allgemein als ein “Heidenbau” betrachtet. Jetzt würde man es nicht mehr abbrechen. Jammerschade!

J. Kuoni note: Vom 10. bis 12. Jahrhundert liess sich ein zahlreicher deutscher Adel im Sarganserland nieder, und das deutsche Element verdrängte nach und nach das romanische. Möglich, dass unter den “Heiden” die Reste der Romanen zu verstehen sind.
