A farmer in Fäsch received money from his brother in America to support his old father. He kept it for himself and left the father in poverty. When the farmer died young, on Saturday evenings the little children would point to a dark place under the chamber stairs and say, “Mother, look, that’s where the father is.” This was repeated for some time. The woman saw nothing, but was still afraid and sent for a Capuchin monk from Mels, who then found out the details and decided that the wrong that had been done had to be made good. There was no money left. The widow had to ask the community assembly to release her from the debt. On the advice of the council leaders, it was decided unanimously according to the minutes of the meeting. From then on, the poor soul of the departed father had peace and never appeared again.

Editor’s note: usually it is the guilty party (the young farmer) that comes back as the ghost, but this time it appears to be the victim (the farmer’s father). However, the redemption and release of the spirit has to be the most bureaucratic ever: local council meetings have power!
324. Der Vaters Geist
Ein Bauer im Fäsch bekam von seinem Bruder aus Amerika Geld, um damit den alten Vater zu unterstüzen. Er behielt es für sich und überliess den Vater der Armenbehörde. Als der Bauer jung starb, zeigten die kleinen Kinder an den Samstagabenden auf eine dunkle Stelle unter der Kammerstiege und sagten: “Mutter, lug, dort ist der Vater.”
Das wiederholte sich einige Zeit. Die Frau sah nichts, fürchtete sich aber doch und liess einen Kapuziner von Mels kommen, der dann den nähern Sachverhalt erfuhr und entschied, dass begangene Unrecht müsse gut gemacht werden. Geld war keines mehr vorhanden.
Die Witfrau musste an die Gemeindeversammlung die Bitte stellen, die Schuld möchte ihr nachgelassen werden. Auf das Gutachten des Verwaltungsrates wurde dies einstimmig beschlossen laut Verhandlungsprotokoll. Von da an hatte die arme Seele des abgeschiedenen Vaters Ruhe und erschien nie mehr.
