In the forest below Casella, on the Grossberg at Flums, an unfathomably deep passage begins between the red rocks westwards towards the ravine. Whoever went into it in the middle of the holy night could gain great wealth.

This is what the farmer of the nearby Girenloch estate dared to do. He came up and down several stairs into a high, mysteriously lit room. There was a chest. A fiery hound was sitting on it.

A little man approached the farmer and said that his desire for wealth would be fulfilled if he obeyed everything he was told. First he should grab the fiery dog and put it on the ground. The farmer did so. Then the little man opened the big chest, which contained many small boxes full of gold. The farmer could take one of the boxes and carry it into his house before one o’clock. If he was not too tired, he would allow him to come back and get a second box on the same condition.

The farmer happily carried the gold-filled box to the exit and put it down there. He thought he would be even more certain to win the second box if he fetched it immediately. He thought: “From there my house is near; it is going downhill that I bring both boxes together.” He actually got the second box and reached the exit with it. But now he was so dead tired that he had to sit down and fell asleep. When he woke up in the morning, the two boxes of gold were no longer there.

Das Hundloch am Grossberg

Im Wald unter Casella, am Grossberg zu Flums, beginnt zwischen den roten Felsen ein unergründet tiefer Gang westlich gegen das Tobel zu. Wer in der Mitte der heiligen Nacht hineingehe, könne zu grossem Reichtum gelangen. Das wagte der Bauer des nahen Gutes Girenloch.

Er kam über mehrere Treppen auf und ab in einen hohen, geheimnisvoll erleuchteten Raum. Da war eine Truhe. Ein feuriger Hund saß darauf. Ein Männlein trat dem Bauer entgegen und sagte, sein Begehren nach Reichtum werde erfüllt, wenn er alles, was man ihm befehle, genau befolge. Zuerst solle er den feurigen Hund anfassen und auf den Boden stellen. Der Bauer tat es. Da öffnete das Männlein die grosse Truhe, welche viele kleine Kistlein voll Gold enthielt.

Der Bauer könne ein Kistlein nehmen und vor ein Uhr in sein Haus tragen. Wenn er dann nicht zu müde sei, gestatte er ihm, nocheinmal zu kommen und unter gleicher Bedingung ein zweites Kistlein zu holen. Der Bauer trug das goldgefüllte Kistlein freudig dem Ausgang zu und stellte es dort ab. Er glaubte, das zweite Kistlein noch sicherer zu gewinnen, wenn er es sofort hole.

Er dachte: “Von da weg ist mein Haus nah; es geht abwärts, daß ich beide Kistlein zusammen fortbringe,” Er erhielt wirklich auch das zweite Kistlein und gelangte damit bis zum Ausgang. Jetzt war er aber so todmüde, dass er sich niedersetzen musste und einschlief. Als er am hellen Morgen wieder erwachte, waren die zwei Kistlein voll Gold nicht mehr vorhanden.
