A woman was walking from the village of Flums to the house near St. Jacob’s Chapel on the Grossberg. On the way, she met a beautiful maiden who offered her an apron full of coals. The woman laughed at first and rejected the coals outright, but finally she took some. The maiden wept bitterly because she did not see her wish fulfilled.

When the woman came home, she threw the coals on the cooker and, lo and behold, they turned into pure gold. Now the woman was sorry that she had not taken all the coals. She quickly returned to the place of the encounter. But the maid had disappeared. If the woman had fulfilled the poor woman’s wish, the hour of salvation would probably have struck for her.

338. Verwandlung der Kohlen in Gold

Eine Frau ging aus dem Dorfe Flums nach dem am Grossberg bei der St. Jakobskapelle gelegenen Hause. Auf dem Wege begegnete ihr eine schöne Jungfrau, die ihr eine Schürze voll Kohlen anerbot. Die Frau lachte vorerst und schlug die Kohlen rundweg ab; endlich steckte sie doch einige zu sich. Bitterlich weinte die Jungfrau, da sie ihren Wunsch nicht erfüllt sah.

Als die Frau nach Hause kam, warf sie die Kohlen auf den Herd, und steh, sie verwandelten sich in lauteres Gold. Jetzt gereute es die Frau, nicht alle Kohlen genommen zu haben. Schnell kehrte sie wieder an den Ort der Begegnung zurück. Aber die Jungfrau war und blieb verschwunden. Hätte die Frau den Wunsch der Armen erfüllt, so hätte wahrscheinlich für diese die Stunde der Erlösung geschlagen.
