Once a dairyman intended to stop praying the Hail Mary and therefore stayed in his hut at the appointed time and instead mocked the other praying peasants.

Then the door of the hut flew open with a loud crash. But no one would show up to open it, so the peasants closed it again. This happened a second time. When the dairyman was about to close the door again for the third time, he saw an unusually tall man standing in front of the hut, wearing a high, wobbly hat on his head, who addressed him in a deep voice that sounded as if from far away: “I advise you to pray the Hail Mary without delay!”

Trembling and quivering, the dairyman obeyed. The dark night-walker, however, stood behind him, looked over his shoulder while he prayed and said afterwards: “It is good for you that you have not uttered a single word; otherwise I would have ruined you like Gstüpp in the sun!

Gstüpp or Stuppe is the name given to the Tow (fibre) of the hemp. This probably refers to the light fog that gives way before the sun.

264. Ernste Mahnung

Einst beabsichtigte ein Senn, das Ave Maria nicht mehr zu beten und blieb deshalb um die bestimmte Zeit in der Hütte, wo er mit den andern Knechten des Gebetes spottete.

Da flog mit lautem Krachen die Hüttentüre auf. Es wollte sich aber niemand zeigen, der diese aufgemacht hätte, weshalb sie die Knechte wieder zuschlössen. So geschah es auch zum zweiten Male. Als der Senn beim dritten Male die Türe wieder schliessen wollte, sah er einen ungewöhnlich grossen Mann vor der Hütte stehen, der einen hohen, wackeligen Hut auf dem Kopfe trug und der ihn mit einer tiefen, wie aus der Ferne her tönenden Stimme also anredete: “Ich rate dir, unverweilt das Ave Maria zu beten!”

Zitternd und bebend gehorchte der Knecht. Der finstere Nachtwandler aber stand hinter ihm, schaute ihm während des Gebetes über die Achsel und sprach nachher: “Es ist dir guot chu, dass du kei einzigs Wort usglu häst; sust hätt ich dich verrupft wie ‘s Gstüpp in der Sunnä!”

Gstüpp, Stuppe heisst der Abfall des Werges beim Hanf. Gemeint sind wohl die leichten Nebel, die vor der Sonne weichen.
