The majority of the population of Sargans converted to the new faith in 1531, including Abbot Jakob of Pfäfers. As punishment for this, he did not become blessed. In the crypt of the church, where the abbots were buried in full regalia, there is a damp spot in the wall where no mortar will hold. There the apostate abbot is walled in, and there he weeps for his sins.

Ein unseliger Abt

Der Grossteil der sarganserländischen Bevölkerung trat im Jahre 1531 zum neuen Glauben über, so auch der Abt Jakob von Pfäfers. Zur Strafe dafür ist er nicht selig geworden. In der Totengruft der Kirche, wo die Äbte in vollem Ornate beigesetzt wurden, zeigt sich in der Mauer eine feuchte Stelle, an der kein Mörtel halten will. Dort ist der abtrünnige Abt eingemauert, und dort beweint er seine Sünden.
