Not far from the small town of Sargans, on the ride towards the railway station, there is a large spring hole called “Urtel“. A town once stood here, which perished as a punishment for the immorality of its inhabitants. The unfathomably deep hole is the name of the place where the town hall stood, in which neither law nor justice was practised.

Once someone wanted to measure the depth of the hole with a thread; then it cried out from the hole:

“If you fathom me,
I will devour you!”

The person in question now refrained from measuring. Not far from here, on the Malerva meadows at the foot of the Gonzen, the Historical Society of St. Gallen had the foundation walls of extensive Roman residential buildings and baths excavated in 1865, which prove that the legend of an ancient city is not a mere figment of the imagination. It is said to have been called Ordelium.

Das Urtel

Unweit des Städtchens Sargans befindet sich auf den Rietern gegen den Bahnhof hin ein grosses Quellenloch, “Urtel” genannt. Hier stand vor Zeiten eine Stadt, welche zur Strafe für die Sittenlosigkeit ihrer Einwohner untergegangen ist. Das benannte unergründlich tiefe Loch bezeichne die Stelle, wo das Rathans gestanden, in welchem weder Recht noch Gerechtigkeit gehandhabt worden.

Einst wollte jemand mit einem Faden die Tiefe des Loches messen; da rief es aus diesem herauf:

“Ergründest du mich,
So verschlinge ich dich!”

Der Betreffende unterliess nun das Messen. Nicht weit davon, nämlich auf den Malervawiesen, am Fusse des Gonzen, hat der Historische Verein von St. Gallen im Jahre 1865 die Grundmauern ausgedehnter römischer Wohngebäude und Bäder ausgraben lassen, welche beweisen, dass die Sage von einer alten Stadt nicht ein blosses Phantasiegebilde ist. Sie soll Ordelium geheissen haben.
