A man from Burgerau was once walking home at midnight by the “Stiegelen” and heard someone sneeze. He said, “God bless you!” It happened again, and he made the same pious wish. The third time, however, the Burgerauer lost his patience and cried out unwillingly, “Devil bless you!”

Now a loud weeping and wailing was audible and then the words:

“Oh, I am unlucky! Now I am thrown back into the old misery! With the third “God bless you” you would have redeemed me!”

Helf dir Gott

Ein Burgerauer ging einmal um 12 Uhr in der Nacht bei der “Stiegelen” vorbei nach Hause und hörte jemand niesen. Er sagte: “Helf dir Gott!” Noch einmal geschah es, und er sprach den gleichen frommen Wunsch. Beim dritten Mal aber verlor der Burgerauer die Geduld und rief unwillig: “Helf dir der Teufel!” Jetzt war ein lautes Weinen und Jammern vernehmbar und dann die Worte: “O, ich Unglücklicher! Jetzt bin ich wieder zurückgeworfen ins alte Elend! Mit dem dritten “Helf dir Gott” hättest du mich erlöst!”
