A carpenter from Grabs was once walking home from Buchs late at night. He had been working there. As he came to the Studner bridge, a man in black who must have risen from the ground suddenly stood in front of him. Without saying a word, the stranger wanted to offer his hand in greeting to the late hiker. But the latter remained calm and merely offered the axe handle, whereupon the sinister man disappeared as he had come.

It was not until the next day that the carpenter noticed five burn marks on his axe handle in the shape of the five fingers.

Eine ungesuchte Begegnung

Ein Grabser Zimmermann ging einst spät abends von Buchs her nach Hause. Er hatte dort gearbeitet. Als er zum Studner Brückli kam, stand plötzlich ein schwarzer Mann vor ihm, der dem Boden entstiegen sein musste. Ohne ein Wort zu sagen, wollte der Fremde dem späten Wanderer die Hand zum Grusse bieten. Dieser aber behielt ruhiges Blut und reichte bloss den Axtstiel dar, worauf der Unheimliche verschwand, wie er gekommen war.

Erst am andern Tag bemerkte der Zimmermann an seinem Axtstiel fünf Brandmale in der Form der fünf Finger.
