A carter from Diepoldsau often went to the quarry at Monstein late in the evening to fetch his last load. Afterwards, as was customary in those days, he sat on his saddle horse and drove across the meadow towards his village. Sometimes an eerie companion would join him, sat on a horse and riding alongside. The carter would gallop along until the sinister man disappeared just as suddenly as he had come.

Der unheimliche Reiter

Ein Diepoldsauer Fuhrmann holte oft spät abends noch im Steinbruch am Monstein seine letzte Fuhre, Hernach setzte er sich, wie es damals üblich war, auf das Sattelpferd und fuhr über das Ried hinaus seinem Dorfe zu. Manchmal gesellte sich dann ein unheimlicher Begleiter zu ihm, setzte sich aufs Nebenross und ritt mit. In sausenden Galopp ging es dahin, bis der Unheimliche plötzlich verschwand, wie er gekommen war.
