St. Gallus once came to our region on his journey through the Rheingau. He was tired from the long journey, sat down and feasted on a cool drink that gushed fresh from the ground. With heartfelt thanks to God, he blessed the spring so that it would always flow abundantly and refresh others in the same way. From that time on, the well was called the Gallus Well. You will find it near the St. Margrethen-Rheineck road, surrounded by green lawns and framed by the blossoms or fruit blessings of our fruit trees.

Thirsty field workers like to draw their drink from the Well; but carters also like to water their horses there, because this water is said to be particularly beneficial to the animals.

Folklore has it that an underground passage still leads from Grimmenstein (Greifenstein?) Castle to this spot, as the knights once used to water their horses at the Gallus Spring.

Der Gallenbrunnen

Der heilige Gallus kam einst auf seiner Wanderung durch die Rheingaue auch in unsere Gegend. Er war von der weiten Reise ermüdet, setzte sich hin und labte sich an einem kühlen Trunk, der frisch aus der Erde hervorquoll. Mit innigem Dank gegen Gott segnete er die Quelle, dass sie stets reichlich fliessen und andere in gleicher Weise erquicken möge. Das Brünnlein hiess von der Zeit an der Gallenbrunnen. Du findest ihn in der Nähe der Landstrasse St. Margrethen-Rheineck, umgeben von grünendem Rasen und umrahmt von der Blütenpracht oder dem Fruchtsegen unserer Obstbäume.

Durstende Feldarbeiter schöpfen ihren Trunk gerne aus dem Gallenbrunnen; aber auch die Fuhrleute tränken dort gerne ihre Pferde, weil dieses Wasser den Tieren besonders zuträglich sein soll. Der Volksmund erzählt, von der Burg Grimmenstein führe ein unterirdischer Gang heute noch zu dieser Stelle, da die Ritter einst ihre Pferde am Gallenbrunnen zu tränken pflegten.
