Many, many years ago, there was nothing unusual in the woods at Winkästeig [Winkenstieg] and Pfi [Pfyn/Pfin], near Muolä [Muolen]. In the neighbourhood near Risershus, the Wood-Nanny lived; she was in the forest more than she was at home. But she had a lot of misery. She would often enchant children so that they couldn’t find their way out of the forest until the dark of night.

Some of the men couldn’t walk any further; without knowing why. The neighbours were joking that their cows were were wasting away; in short, all the people feared her.

One day in Risershus, the music was blaring in the inn, and the Wood-Nanny was so disturbed that she came out of her house. Then she had the crazy idea to hang herself from a thread. She tried it, and it worked. Men then buried her up in the forest that evening. Soon I heard that the Wood Nan was haunting in the forest.

One day, a carpenter from Häggenschwil was walking home through the forest from Muolä. n jest, he called out: “Holz-Nann, come! Come, take me!” When he finally arrived home, he noticed that his black plumb line had come out of his bag. He went back to retrieve it, and in the forest, he saw that it had fallen out right where he had called the Wood Nanny. Using a stick, he dug around and found that she was buried there. He turned completely pale, collapsed, and died

In the same forest, there were also stone-throwing ghosts. If people walked through the forest, stones were thrown at them but no-one was ever hit.

Mängä Ma hat öppä ne mol au nümme witer chönne laufä; er hät selber nüt gewüsst worum. D’Nochburä händ g’jomeret, ihre Chüh verwersät; churz, all’ Lüt händ sie g’fürcht. Do hät ämol z’Risershus änä im Wirtshus d’Musik blosä, und d’Holz-Nann ist drob ganz us em Hüsli cho. Do ist ere dä verruckt Ifall cho, sie well si amene Fadä hänkä. Sie häts probiert, und richtig isch es glungä. Mä hat sie dänn amene Obig im Wald obä vergrabä. Bald hat mär g’hört, d’Holz-Nann tüeg im Wald geistä.

Do ist emol en Häggeschwiler Zimmerma vo Muolä äwäg dur der Wald hei. Mutwillig rüft er: “Holz-Nann, chumm! Chumm, hol mi!” Won er bald däheime gsi isch, gseht er, dass ihm sini schwarze Richtschnurrollä im Sack inne ufgangä ist. Er goht der Schnur no zruck, und im Wald inne gseht er, dass sie ihm det usä gfallen ist, wo er der Holz-Nann gerüft hat. Mit mäne Stäckä grabt er uf und gseht, dass do d’Holz-Nann vergrabä ist. Er wird ganz bleich, fallt um und ist ä Lich.

Im gliche Wald sind au Steiwörfer gsi. Wemä dur de Wald ganga ist, so hänt s’Stei uf d’Lüt geworfä; aber niemet ist truffa wordä.
