Der Volksmund, der sonst lieber mehrt als mindert, scheint hier Wesentliches unterwegs verloren zu haben. Vielfach treffen wir die Sage, die Pest habe da und da so stark geherrscht, dass ein Hasel- oder Holunderstock, den man zum Fenster hineingestreckt, augenblicklich schwarz geworden sei. So ist sicherlich auch dieses Haus zu seinem Namen gekommen; von der Krankheit soll es selbst schwarz geworden sein.
