St. Georgen was also involved in raid on the Rorschach monastery. When the Confederates marched on the city of St. Gallen in February 1490, they also came to St. Georgen plundering. Abbot Ulrich gave the bell from the church tower to the Swiss as the spoils of war. It still hangs in the well today.

However, according to popular lore, the Swiss stole the bell.

Editors note: St. Gallen didn’t join the Swiss confederation until 1803, as part of Napoleon Bonaparte’s reorganisation of the country, hence the portrayal of the Swiss as outside invaders. The fragment isn’t clear where the Brunnen (well/spring/fountain) is.

Kriegsbeute

Auch St. Georgen war am Rorschacher Klostersturm beteiligt. Als dann die Eidgenossen im Februar 1490 vor die Stadt St. Gallen zogen, kamen sie auch plündernd nach St. Georgen. Abt Ulrich schenkte den Schwizern von der Kriegsbeute die Glocke aus dem Kirchturm. Sie hängt heute noch zu Brunnen.

Der Volksmund sagt aber, die Schwizer hätten die Glocke gestohlen.
