In the Steinach Gorge, behind Mr Hausmann’s pharmacy an opening can be seen in the rock face. A secret passageway is said to have led from here through the rocky ridge of the Bernegg, which was used in times of war.

Editors note: there was a Hausmann-owned pharmacy in the city centre that closed in 2017, after 145 years, but it is some distance from the Steinach Gorge (although the stream now runs under the city so is mostly hidden), this fragment may refer to a different place.

Bernegg is the site of an ancient castle, near St. Georgen and the Steinach Gorge / Müllegg stream. Whether there was ever a secret passage has been lost to the mysteries of time. However, this hill fort doesn’t appear to have been usable for many centuries.
